Celtic Woman
I was channel surfing and ended up on Georgia Public Television. A musical group, Celtic Woman, was playing. I think I have found another kind of music that I like. This group is going to be in Atlanta at the Fox Theatre on February 15 & 16, 2010. I may have to get tickets. I really enjoyed their music. Amazing Grace is one of my favorite songs, and they sang it with bagpipes in the background. Very beautiful.
I did an additional search about this song, and found this video containing images of the World Trade Center attacks on 9/11, as well as Iraq war images.
Glamour/Fantasy/Fashion
Well, the school quarter is winding down, and it’s crunch time. Major crunch time. I say each quarter I’m going to do better about organization; however, those old habits are hard to break. I was researching for poses to do for the Glamour/Fantasy/Fashion and came across this article in Photography.com.
My Own Personal Santa
My Father-in-law, James, was our Santa for the Holiday Portraits set. He makes a great Santa, and he loves talking to all the kids, both young and old. He will be playing Santa again on December 5th at the downtown Atlanta Georgia Power Building for “Saturday with Santa.” Gwinnett Technical College’s Photo Department is graciously allowing the set to be used at that function as well. It’s great having my own personal Santa! The only negative is that I have to be good all year round.
Who to Intern With?
On Tuesday, we had a lecture about our internship. I’m a little bit apprehensive about my internship; however, on the other side of the coin, I am excited as well. I have a bunch of questions. Who do I intern with? Where are they located? Will our personalities clash? So many things to take into consideration. I have been researching some photographers on Photoserve. I have some physical limitations (my age, arthritis, and a bad back) that may cause issues. My heart and mind are ready to rock and roll, but the body has to warm up before shifting into go! I’m still pondering over which area of photography to pursue. I am hoping that the internship will help me with that decision. When we retire we will probably move closer to our daughter. She lives in Blairsville, Ga., and we still have my childhood home in Hiawassee, Ga.
Old Photography and Techniques
I had my TV on today while I was doing some of my domestic chores, and I don’t even remember the movie. However, I was watching some of the beginning credits, and it said filmed in Technicolor. What is technicolor? I wanted to find out more, so I googled Technicolor. It was some interesting reading. In addition, I wanted to see a film clip that demonstrated technicolor photography, and the 1948 original trailer of the “Fighter Squadron” was high up on the list.
I found this article about the Technicolor camera as I was going through the research. Also, the Photographic History Collection of the national Museum of American History has some great images to view as well.
Just a Little Humor for the Holidays
This is Freckles, and she was asleep on my daughter. There was some kind of loud noise just as I was going to get the picture of the two of them sleeping. The noise made Freckles jump and the first image is her reaction to the noise. As the holidays approach, my stress level is climbing as well. So, I wanted to add a little humor to help with the stress. I hope it helps with your stress too. Happy Thanksgiving from my family to yours. We hope everyone has a safe and relaxing holiday.
Animal Photography
I love National Geographic. The magazine has been around since 1888, and that means a lot of pictures. The images that the photographers capture just takes my breathe away. I was reviewing some photos by photographer Paul Nicklen. He was in Antarctica photographing Leopard Seals. The attached video reveals some of the dangers that goes along with the job description.
Pleasantly Surprised
Last night I was working on my MacBook, and I noticed that the battery was not charging. Also, after working on it for awhile, it locked up on me. Finally, I closed the lid and reopened it; however, the laptop would not even turn on. After class today, I went to the Apple Store in the Mall of Georgia in Buford. I didn’t realize that I needed an appointment, but the employees were very helpful and got me scheduled. I only waited about 30 minutes before they could help me. They ran some diagnostics, and it was determined that the battery was bad. It was replaced, free of charge, since I had the laptop less than a year. I was sure I would be out a small chunk of money to get it fixed. I was very pleasantly surprised when the service tech said “no charge.” In my opinion, that store definitely rates A++++ for customer service as well as prompt attention to my problem. Thank you Apple Store for getting me back up and running.
New Camera
I have shot with Nikon for quite awhile now. I have been pleased overall with Nikon’s performances. I started with the Nikon N90s film camera. I upgraded to Nikon Digital with the D100 camera, and have used it for the past 5 years. It’s time for another upgrade, and I chose the Nikon D700. I have been using it for just a couple of days, but I think I am going to very pleased with the images it will produce.
Being a Volunteer
My husband, Jim, and I volunteer at Emory’s Hope Lodge. It is a facility where cancer patients and their families have a temporary place to stay during treatment. We, along with other volunteers from Southern Company prepare a full meal for the residents. We do this usually four times a year. On Thursday, November 19, we will be preparing a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, including turkey, cornbread dress, green beans, and sweet potato casserole. For desert, we will have pecan and pumpkin pies. We lost a niece to stomach cancer two years ago. She was only 31, and her little boy was 5 when she passed away, so we have first hand experience how devastating this disease can be. I will take pictures of our work, the meal we prepare, and the patients (if they approve) for our volunteer group.
